A Timeline of Protection

1992

Camp Awahanee

Mountain residents helped facilitate the purchase of Camp Awahanee in Upper Deep Creek, a 100-acre property on Green Valley Lake Road, adding it to the San Bernardino National Forest.

1993

Deep Creek Open Space Coalition

The Deep Creek Open Space Coalition is formed in an effort to protect Deep Creek Watershed, a 300-acre property.

1995

SBMLT Founded

The first official meeting of the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust Formation Committee is held in December.

1996

Nonprofit Status & Early Acquisitions

SBMLT acquires 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit public organization. Facilitates the purchase of Upper Deep Creek Parcel (300 acres), Garner Ranch I (155 acres), and Garner Ranch II (26 acres).

1997

Continued Growth

Facilitates the purchase of the Garner Remainder Parcel (239 acres) and Calvary Camp in Upper Deep Creek (98 acres).

1998

Newsletter & Valley Vista

SBMLT publishes the inaugural edition of the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust Newsletter. Takes title to Valley Vista (23 acres). Facilitates purchases of Bautista I (180 acres), Holcomb Valley I (46 acres), Grenzow (80 acres), Camp Helendade Parcel (124 acres), and Wilderness Road Parcel (101 acres).

1999

Wildflower Guide Published

SBMLT publishes Wildflowers of the San Bernardino Mountains, the first field guide of common wildflowers. Facilitates purchase of Bautista II (161 acres), Holcomb Valley II (78 acres), and Bautista III (91 acres). Initiates a survey identifying 50,000 acres of forest land in need of preservation.

2000

Dry Creek & More

Acquires Dry Creek (1 acre) at the County tax sale auction. Facilitates purchase of Bautista IV (44 acres) and Bautista V (86 acres). Provides profile to the Wildland Conservancy encouraging purchase of Bluff Lake (120 acres).

2001

Save the Saints Campaign

Partners with neighboring groups to launch the Save the Saints campaign. Facilitates purchase of Gregory Property (120 acres), Bautista VI (118 acres), Lion Peak (640 acres), and Pinewood (242 acres).

2002

Deep Creek Headwaters

Facilitates purchase of Broom Flat (90 acres), Mission Springs (520 acres), Section 31 Pacific Crest Trail (640 acres), and Onyx Summit PCT (50 acres). Purchases Deep Creek Headwaters (42 acres).

2003

Major Acquisitions

Facilitates purchase of Johnson Ranch (352 acres), Lookout Mountain (480 acres), and Healy (1,240 acres).

2004

Trees Guide & Standards

Publishes Trees of the San Bernardino Mountains. Formally adopts Land Trust Alliance professional standards. Assists in transfer of Frankish Peak (25 acres) to the National Forest.

2005

Eagle Canyon & Yaeger Mesa

Receives land donation from Trust for Public Land of Eagle Canyon (640 acres) and Yaeger Mesa (185 acres). Establishes Revolving Acquisition Fund.

2006

Cosy Dell

Facilitates purchase of Cosy Dell (51 acres) at the underpass at Cleghorn Canyon of Interstate 15.

2007

Major Transfers & Acquisitions

Transfers Yucaipa Ridge (1,145 acres) to the U.S. Forest Service. Facilitates purchase of Wildhorse Creek (273 acres), Sugar Bush I (313 acres), Asbestos Mountain (480 acres), and Palm Canyon (642 acres). Transfers Grass Valley Creek (156 acres) to the Forest Service.

2008

Conservation Easement

SBMLT takes title to a special 7-acre Conservation Easement to protect Mill Creek and Mountain Home Creek.

2009

Timber Gulch & More

Purchases Timber Gulch (26 acres) at county tax sale. Facilitates purchase of Tayles Hidden Ranch (320 acres) and Carrizo Creek (640 acres). Sells Eagle Canyon (640 acres) and Yaeger Mesa (186 acres) to the Forest Service.

2010

Cajon Ridge

Facilitates purchase of Cajon Ridge South (80 acres) and Cajon Ridge North (180 acres).

2011

Arrowhead Ridge Acquired

Purchases Strawberry Peak (50 acres) in Twin Peaks. Transfers Sugar Pine Ridge (110 acres) to the National Forest. Purchases Eagle Ridge (80 acres) in Lake Arrowhead — now Arrowhead Ridge.
